Allosaurus fragilis, left ilium, hip bone
Late Jurassic, western North America.

The ilium, a hip bone, along with the pubis and ischium, make up the pelvis in dinosaurs.  The hip shape differs between dinosaur species and provides information about a dinosaur’s evolutionary relationships.  The broad, plate like part of the ilium is for the attachment of powerful muscles which moved the leg.  The semi-circular part is the upper half of the hip joint.  This replica ilium is from a juvenile dinosaur, an Allosaurus only 1/4 adult size.

This fossil cast comes with an informative card.
